Dialogue: GET REAL!

TOY STORY

(hypereality and simulation)

Toy story movie is a simulation movie that shows that toys are alive. So we use this movie as an inspiration to get along with the concept of Get real! that everything is not real nowadays including toys that can talk.

RESPONSE 13 : PARAMETRICS

Parametrics is a new architecture style after modernism; the style is dynamic and influenced from organic forms. It is quite new for everyone to see architecture is not a square building. The Parametricism is look like randomly but it’s not, it use the surrounding sites and parameter to create a flow form,

The joints are all different from each other, it is custom made some how. The architects use computer program to calculate and to build the form such as Rhinoceros, Maya and etc. So the Parametric building is design for only one particular site.

Image

Besides the example of architecture, I’ve found that nowadays people are like to be different from one another. We are not in Modernism anymore that everyone is using the same things because it is the era of mass production, but now everyone can have their own custom made in almost everything such as cars, cloth, food (we can order in the way we like). In the present day Parametric plays a large role in our society. All of our interests is different and its become a marketing in computer or website company. For example in the class, we tried to search the word ‘Jordan’ but the result are different some got Jordan as a country and some got Michael Jordan. So the marketing is customize according to how people wants and interest, as we can see from Youtube website that in the homepage it will shows the clips that we might interests for me it is a Asian drama but for my brother is a Hiphop singer Music video. So people are not the same anymore in the era of Parametricism.

RESPONESE: 12 Things

What is thing? Why it is very important for us? In the lecture we saw the film name Dawn of Man, the ape is showing the sign of evolution, the sign that shows that in the past once we were all apes. Yes, it’s the bone that the ape was shaking.

Bones are thing, a thing that made us different from other animal. I think things are very essential to human it is like a tool for us to do something that other species can’t. There was a funny picture that imitate Charles Darwin theory of human evolution by adding things in, and we are all sees that human is survive because of tools and tools are kind of symbol that shows that how much we are developed.

Image

Nowadays things also can define human somehow. As you can see from the society that we are now living in the world of materialisms, price of things become a factor for judging people, person who wearing a brand name cloth is richer than whom wearing tshirt.  In architecture field things also influence a lot in designing form and function of the building. I think architecture is one kind of thing also, its produce convenience to human and also give identity. Honestly I think people right now is using things incorrectly (including me lol ) we are attracted by the aesthetics of things for example mobile phone, the real function is to contact with others but we are looking for the one that more function, more beauty and more cool. I think we should not let things become this important in our life, we must use things to provide our convenience not for showing off.

RESPONSE: 11 DEEP ECOLOGY

I think Deep ecology is about everything in this world is connected to each other in some ways; everything got their own system to survive.  I believe that everything in this world is linked like a network if too much or without something, its not going to be good.  In our real life we’re living in cycle, we born, live, die then we born again. The cycle is infinite and it is going to repeat forever.

The idea of systematic and cycle is quite good for me, since it is an order and reasonable. But if we already have a system in a place, doesn’t it mean that we are living in Utopia? Are we? I think no. Because we are still killing and things are keep dying. Utopia is an ideal place that every system in that world is too perfect and every living thing is living happily together. But Utopia is like the reflection from the mirror that it can only be viewed but never be touched. Nowadays eco system is already changed because of human. We face the natural disaster situation because we are too much consuming and we are just one little species in this system so the whole system is unbalanced right now because of human beings only thinks about themselves, they think that if everything are enough for consuming then it must be a Utopia. But no it is not if we don’t start to care other lives in our system.

RESPONSE:10 MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR

From my understanding, utopia is an ideal city that perfect in everything so people can live there happily. In the contrast way dystopia is represent of like totalitarian governments, poverty, pollution and fear.

After watching The Hunger games I think the movie can show very well in difference of Utopia and Dystopia city. The Capitol, the capital of Panem acted as a Utopian society since the seat of power is here. Citizen of the Capitol is extremely wealthy and unconcerned with the poverty of surrounded twelve districts that ruled absolutely by the Capitol, They just enjoying a mass entertainment like the Hunger Games.  The twelve districts is acted like a resource that export their products to serve the Capitol, so it made many districts face with the poverty issue and not enough food to feed their citizen. For me the twelve districts are like a Dystopia society because they are under controlled of the Capitol strictly. In the movie you can clearly see the huge difference city between District 12 and the Capitol through Katniss journey and we can see also the relationship between these two societies that the Capitol citizen thinks that they’re higher than the districts people by set the rule of The Hunger Games that the citizen of Capitol can not be a tributes of this game, only the twelve districts can. So they think they can play with the tributes lives and enjoying this crazy game every year without any feeling to against it. In the end of the movie I think Panem is a dystopia even though the capital city is a utopia but the kingdom is separated in 2 classes of people and its not balancing, people hate each other, they don’t care to others lives. In the future it must be something happen because of this too different society, the district people maybe fight against the Capitol because of their sons and daughters must died every year because of this crazy game or some of the district are run out of resources?

Lastly I think Utopia and Dystopia is depends on human perception, maybe the district life is already a utopia for them rather than stay in the Capitol.

RESPONSE:09 PLACE-SPACE?

What is the difference between place and space? I’ve thought it was the same thing until I’ve learnt about this “place and space” theory. From my understanding, space is like an open undefined area or a volume of unlimited dimensions. Place is a point in space when the dimensions are more or less known and also it derived from how people experience and perceive it. Place can be described by human action and perception, for example when you see the building with full of high school students walking around, you will probably guess that it is a school or an extra tutorial school. But if you graduate from this school you must say that it is your second home or maybe a memorial place? So place can be defined also by human memories or experiences.

In the film Powaqqatsi, it showed the transformation of place by people usage.  As we can understand from the dirt mountain that a hundred of people walking up and down carry something. At first we might think the mountain is just a view or a panorama but later when we saw this hundred of human, we can predict that maybe it is a human labor for build something in the mountain? Also the film showed different context with human movement, how it change the environment or context of the place. It made me think that sometimes place and activities is completely not get along to each other but because of the activities itself can give us a clue of what the function of this place.

And again as I mention before, human perceptions is very important to describe places because once you experienced or have some memories with that place you will not able to describe it as an ordinary ‘space’ anymore because your brain were already remember and it will create nostalgia feeling whenever you come to this place.

RESPONSE:07 AESTHETICS

Aesthetic is pertaining to a sense of the beauty, but how can we judge what is aesthetic and what is not if it depends on people thought and feelings. Aesthetics in the past people judged by following the majority opinion, so it become a trend and everyone thought that it’s beautiful. If something is different from others then it not, this is what people in the past think and also nowadays people do. In the class Aj.Taylor showed us the photo of Miss Korea that everyone looks like they’re all twins. It made us know that in Korea they thought that if have face like this is it is beautiful. From this public idea that judge about aesthetics it made me think about the movie called “Mean Girls” that there is a girl gang in school that they think they’re pretty and the perfect girl in school. When new student move in, she wants to be friend with this group so she have to change herself to be like one of them. She has to dress like them, make up and speak like them. So this is like what social effect to people perception about aesthetic.

Image

In modernism people thought that the glass box building is aesthetics like we can see from “Play time” movie last year showed by Aj.Taylor. People in that period dress in dull tone because they are told that it is beautiful and they don’t have anything to compare with. But after people are getting bored of this plain and simple thing so they change into what is contrast. And it will be like this again and again follow what people in that period interest. So what is the true aesthetic? I think we can’t conclude the style because it is dynamic, it changes all the time like trend.

RESPONSE06: PROFANITY

Sacred is some thing connected with gods or dedicated to a religious purpose. When its come to religious, as we all knew that it is very high and untouchable. We can’t do bad things to these sacred object or places, but it depends on what people interpret and perceive anyway. In the past we warship god by their grand and beautiful sculptures but nowadays people use gods in cartoon or movie version so it become more less sacred than before. In Thai society we believe that temple is very sacred place, we have to speak good words, dress polite and follow the rules inside. But now we have Starbucks inside the temple structure, if we look from distance we all will think that it is a temple but if we look carefully it is a coffee shop inside. So we can see that nowadays people play with sacred a lot.

STARBUCKS at SURAWONG RD.

STARBUCKS at SURAWONG RD.

The concept of profane is to play with sacred places, it kind of make away of the god by make a thing that untouchable become ordinary. And sometime it doesn’t have to be only sacred thing, it also to the high-end stuff or precious things. For example Andy Warhol brought art down to the ordinary by make the Campbell soup can into expensive artwork.

For me, I think profanity depends on human perception because some people really don’t play with sacred stuff and there are some that really don’t believe or don’t care about religious. However I think to profane something we should at least be study before use the element or structure of the sacred thing because it will come up with a fail project that everyone critics. We should study and develop the idea into appropriate design.

RESPONSE05: empty form – empty space

Empty form and empty space is it different? What is empty form and space anyway? Why we define it empty if it still has value? This is our topic for discussion this week. For me I think people define it ‘empty’ because we interpret that it doesn’t function anything, not the space is empty.

‘Empty space’ is a space that was designed from function, so it hardly to use as other function. It limits people activities and interaction with the space because of the design that created for particularly one or more function. But ‘Empty form’ is the design that doesn’t use the function as the main factor because they want people to adaptable and fill the activities inside. Empty form is flexible, it can changes through time depends on people. One example of the empty space is the Crown hall by Mies van der Rohe, the building fail to be the empty form, which Mies wanted in the first place due to the materiality and finishing of the building limits the people from all activities. So in the end it become an empty space that no one use. Another successful example of empty form is The Jewish Memorial by Eisenman. It is the memorial monument to the murdered Jews but there are no visual sign that refer to death at all obviously, so people come and use this space in various ways. Then it became the flexible area that people can do anything that they can imagine without the limits. For me I think this kind of theory is very cool to use in our studio project, since it can interact with people and it can adaptive depends on people and time. It kind of we design the real space for human to use not only for one purpose but also to every purpose that they can figure out.

Response04: Hyper-reality and Borat

Hyper-reality is a situation when what reality and fiction are blended seamlessly. It is in between simulation and reality. This made me think about plastic surgery somehow, we want people to think that the artificial is real. We want others to see that it is nature. Some people are completely changed their face and body but no one knows that it is artificial, for example the K-pop singers they are all handsome with perfect shape of everything in their face by plastic surgery, but most of people (including me) still thought that it is nature. So what is reality? Are we living in the hyper-reality world?

In the class, we were given the example of this theory through the movie called “ Borat”. It was very funny and hilarious movie about simulation of Kazakh journalist travelling around USA to film recording the interview and interacting with Americans. Borat looks very real, he made everyone thought that he is actually come from Kazakhstan, even though he is not and no one even knows where Kazakhstan is exactly. The movie made us thinks that Kazakh people are all like Borat. He act very serious in everything, that’s made we laugh because we were all thinks that it is real which I believe it is not. American people in the film don’t questioning his fakeness because of Borat’s action was so realistic even though it is an awkward and funny. For me he is kind of olden countryside people that come into the city and act what he thinks is right.

The hyper-reality of this movie made us questioned that is the Kazakh people are really like this? Why they’re no manners? Are Americans people were a part of the film or not? It is tried to make us believe that the unreal is real, just like the plastic surgery.
